It’s a simple matter, but all too easy to overlook.
In trying to make just the right dietary adjustments for effective weight loss, what we drink matters just as much as what we eat – whether it’s a Mediterranean diet, paleo diet, or fatty liver diet. And that brings us to green tea and green tea extract.
If you read the labels of most weight-loss supplements and fat-burning products, you’ll usually see green tea listed among the ingredients. It is definitely chock full of antioxidants, and it’s health benefits have been touted far and wide.

1. Shows Potential to Help in Moving Fat From Fat Cells to Blood Stream
Often, we tend to overlook an important metabolic step in the process of burning fat. And that is that in order to burn and get rid of fat, your body also has to break down the fat in fat cells and then move it into the bloodstream.
Green tea can help your body do this and green tea can help you lose weight.
There have been some animal studies indicating that certain green tea can help you lose weight and aid the process of breaking down and getting fat into the bloodstream. What these studies have shown is that it tends to enhance the effects of norepinephrine and other hormones that play a vital role in the fat-burning process.
In addition, an antioxidant in this tea, EGCG, can serve to retard or inhibit the working of the enzyme that breaks down the fat-burning hormone norepinephrine.
What this amounts to, then, is that when you consume green tea, you have more norepinephrine to break down fat. And then fat thus broken down can get into the bloodstream to be burned as energy by other cells like muscle cells.

An important aspect of weight loss is what your body does when you’re not doing anything and how well it does it.
Your body still burns calories when you’re resting because it still has to do basic things like breathing, circulating blood, digesting food, and repairing cells. “Basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions . . . a minimum number of calories required for basic functions at rest.”

In addition, a study of obese people in Thailand found that green tea does indeed help “reduce body weight . . . by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation.”
3. Promotes Fat Burning During Exercise
You know that exercise should be an integral part of any effective fat-loss regimen. And green tea can help you get more out of your exercise program for weight loss.
It aids in fat burning during exercise. And that’s why it’s an ingredient in so many pre-workout, fat-burning, and weight-loss supplements.
One study, for example, found that “men who took green tea extract before exercise burned 17% more fat than men who didn’t take the supplement,” which “suggests that green tea can boost the fat-burning effects of exercise.” And another study “determined that green tea catechins increased fat burning both during exercise and rest.”
This drink then is, by all indications, one of the fat-burning foods. And while the results it produces aren’t drastic, it does help burn fat.

So a good approach to weight loss is to avoid extreme diets and just eat a proven healthy diet such as a Mediterranean diet or paleo diet. And then consume green tea or extract to boost the weight-loss effects of the diet.
Green tea works especially well in conjunction with one specialized diet – the fatty liver diet.
A fatty liver, however you arrived at that condition, poses several health risks. But a fatty liver diet and green tea can help reverse the condition and aid in restoring your liver to optimal functioning.

But green has other health benefits that definitely should not be ignored.
Mayo Clinic researchers, for example, discovered that “a component of green tea known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) . . . helps kill leukemia cells by interrupting the communication signals they need to survive.”
In addition, “since the 1970s, epidemiological studies of cancer have shown that in parts of the world where green tea is consumed, the incidence of solid tumor cancers such as breast, lung and gastrointestinal cancers is lower,” and “in the laboratory, the EGCG component of green tea has been proven to induce death in cancer cells from solid tumors.”
